CnG's GT Advanced Report

I went to CnG last Saturday for the GT Advanced Qualifier. It was only some hours after the exhausting FNM Draft in Two Stompas. I have only an hour to prepare my deck and of course I didn't playtest it. But I was using Qliphort so the strategy is pretty straight-forward. Kill the enemy before he kills me. No more no less.

Round one of Qualifier, I fought against Evols. He never had a chance to setup a big field or play his combos so my Qliphort can just run over him quickly.

Round two, I fought against Mutou Ugenk. He used his signature Gravekeepers who got him a top on GT Beginner a week before. Too bad for him, because Necrovalley doesn't do much against Qliphort and his deck doesn't have a good removal against Saqlifice-equipped Qliphort on first turn. Again, my Qliphort just run over him quickly.

Round three, I fought against my worst matchup, Burning Abyss. It was Indra who piloted it. Fire Lake just completely crushed me, both game 1 and game 2. I made a big misplay by not MST-ing his face down trap during his end phase and I got punished.

I also made a big misplay again by not setting Forbidden Chalice when I went first. I only remember that Chalice is used to buff up Qliphort's attack, completely forgetting it's effect negation ability. Indra then can just summon Tour Guide, do his combos, and bye bye.

The result is 2-1, getting me on Top 4. Luckily, I still deserved a seat in the finals of GT Advanced.

Round one, I fought against Tyann. He used Satella-Shadoll deck. In the first game, he didn't get a chance to play his deck. He only summoned Vega which is shutted by Vanity's Emptiness and then get OTK'd by my Qliphorts. Because of that, I only thought that he was playing Satellarknight so I sided heavily for Satellar.

Game two, I got shocked by his Shadoll Fusion which is continued by Satellar play. Worst of all, he flipped a Mask of Restrict which completely shutted down my play to remove his floaters so I lose. Game three was more tense because the time limit is drawing near. I went full power push, dropping him down to below 2000 lp but I can't quite finish the job.

Tyann pushed me back with his Shaddolls and Satellars, backed with Mask of Restrict again (fuck that card) and I have no way to get over it. However, the judge call for time out and I got a win. I feel bad, though, I hope he didn't get salty for it.

Out of topics: I really don't like calculating life point as a method to determine winning or losing in case of time out. It's just not fair because this method only favors aggresive deck who can drop opponent's life point easily. While in Yugioh, what matters most is actually card advantage, not life points. It's just not fair for slow deck who needs to sacrifice time and life points in order to build card advantage.
The fairest one, I think, is to make it automatically draw for players who hasn't finished their duel when the time has runned out. By giving a draw, we are punishing the aggro deck for not being able to finish opponent's life point quick enough while also punishing the slow deck for being too slow in building card advantage and not reducing opponent's life. This is only an opinion, though and it's subject to a debate which I always have a space for it.
Round two, I fought against Indra again. I was really determined to beat him but I failed miserably. Fire Lake crushed me again and again and I can't find an answer to that card yet so I lose.

Round three, I went against Ridho who used his signature Chaos Dragons. It should be a favorable match for Qliphort, theoretically, except that I didn't draw a Scout for game 1 and game 2. Luckily in game 2, I draw a Saqlifice and Laser Qlip and a Disk which allowed me to double summon into Qliphort Disk, searching Scout and went full OTK after that.

Game three, for some reason, I draw three Scouts (technically one Scout and two Summoner's Art but they are basically the same). Chaos Dragons with no good disruptive traps can't handle Qliphort's push effectively so I won.

Round 4, I fought against Sundoro who still faithful in Dark decks. This time he used Denko-Dolls. I was already tired after playing for 6 matches and I know this match is favorable for Qliphort. So I turned on my auto pilot function and just play whatever card in my hand.

Honestly, I can't remember how the game was like. If I have to describe it: game 1 he went game-stealing by ECon-ing my Disk, game 2 I OTK'd him, game 3 I pressured him continously until his life point gone.

In the end, I got 3-1 and finished in 5th position. It's pretty good considering my lack of preparation but I'm still upset on how the Burning Abyss matchup went. If I had more time, I should playtest more against the Burning Abyss in order to get better chance.

Koh Andri, on the other hand, had a great success against Burning Abyss. He defeated two Burning Abyss players, paved his way to Grandfinal and win the GT Advanced in the end. A success like that can only came through good preparation and I didn't do it well so I got punished.

Here is the deck I was using

Pretty standard list, nothing to discuss here, but ignore the Extra Deck though, it's embarassing
In conclusion, I'm not really satisfied with the result I got from GT Advanced. I feel like I'm still lacking a lot in the preparation department. I didn't bring the best side card for Burning Abyss, like Ojama Trio, I still did a lot of misplay which just happened because I don't understand my cards well enough. This needs to be improved in the next events.

Next event for me will be GT OSD and the Yugioh Online Championship. I'm expecting a good result from those events. I hope :)
